The Application of Redispersible Latex Powder in Grouting Mortar
Redispersible latex powder products consist of water-soluble, redispersible powders. They are categorized into various copolymer types—such as vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymers, vinyl acetate-vinyl versatate copolymers, and acrylic copolymers—and utilize polyvinyl alcohol as a protective colloid. Due to its high bonding strength and unique properties, the incorporation of redispersible latex powder into grouting mortar significantly enhances both its adhesion and flexibility.
Bonding mortar—even when applied in very thin layers—must exhibit excellent adhesion to the substrate being bonded. Conversely, unmodified cement mortar typically fails to bond effectively unless the underlying substrate undergoes proper pretreatment.
The addition of redispersible latex powder serves to enhance adhesion. Furthermore, by leveraging the saponification resistance inherent in redispersible latex powder, it is possible to maintain the mortar’s bonding integrity even after exposure to water or frost. Saponification-resistant polymers can be synthesized through the copolymerization of vinyl acetate with other suitable monomers. By applying the expertise gained from utilizing ethylene—a non-saponifiable comonomer—in the manufacturing process, ethylene-containing redispersible latex powders can be produced that fully satisfy all requirements regarding resistance to aging and hydrolysis.
