Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) for Daily Chemical Grade Dishwashing Liquids and Shampoos
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose ethers are widely used in the daily chemical industry, such as in shampoos, shower gels, facial cleansers, and especially HPMC for dishwashing liquid, where they act as stabilizing thickeners, emulsifying stabilizers, and dispersing agents. This requires hydroxypropyl methylcellulose to possess high viscosity, excellent thickening performance, high transparency, and minimal viscosity change under both high and low temperatures, ensuring a smooth and grain-free finished product.
Daily chemical grade hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is primarily a semi-synthetic polymer derived from natural cellulose through a series of chemical modifications. Cellulose ethers are derivatives of natural cellulose, which is a high-molecular-weight compound. Unlike typical synthetic polymers, cellulose does not readily react with etherifying agents in its natural state. After treatment with swelling agents, the strong hydrogen bonds within and between molecular chains are broken, activating hydroxyl groups and forming reactive alkali cellulose. Subsequent reaction with etherifying agents converts OH groups into OR groups, resulting in cellulose ether.
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) appears as a white or slightly yellow powder. In daily chemical applications, especially HPMC for dishwashing liquid and shampoo formulations, the viscosity is typically around 250,000 cps. It is non-toxic, odorless, and tasteless, and dissolves rapidly in cold water or mixed solvents to form a transparent and viscous solution. The aqueous solution exhibits surface activity, strong stability, and high clarity, while its solubility remains stable across a wide pH range.
In applications such as HPMC for dishwashing liquid, shampoos, and shower gels, it functions as an effective thickener and antifreeze agent. It also provides excellent film-forming and water-retention properties, benefiting both hair and skin. With rising raw material costs, using cellulose-based thickeners like HPMC in detergents and personal care products can significantly reduce formulation costs while maintaining high product performance.
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) offers the following advantages in daily chemical applications, including HPMC for dishwashing liquid:
Enhances and stabilizes foam while improving skin feel
Improves conditioning performance
Maintains stability across a wide pH range (3–11)
Improves flow and rheological properties
Provides high temperature resistance and low irritation
HPMC has a broad range of applications in daily chemical products, including HPMC for dishwashing liquid, shampoos, shower gels, facial cleansers, toothpaste, mouthwash, lotions, creams, conditioners, and even toy bubble solutions. In cosmetic formulations, it is mainly used for thickening, foaming, emulsifying stabilization, dispersion, binding, and film formation, as well as improving moisture retention. For high-viscosity systems, it acts as a primary thickener, while in low-viscosity systems, it functions mainly as a suspending and dispersing agent.
