What is Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) used for?
Excellent Water Retention
Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) helps maintain moisture at an optimal level in formulations. Even a small amount of HEC in aqueous solutions significantly improves water retention, reducing water demand during mixing. Proper water retention and adhesion are critical: without them, cement mortar may lose strength and bonding performance, and clay may lose plasticity under pressure.
Pseudoplasticity
HEC exhibits pseudoplastic behavior—its viscosity decreases as shear rate increases. This property makes latex paints easier to apply with a brush or roller, enhancing smoothness and work efficiency. Similarly, shampoos containing HEC are highly fluid, easily diluted, and readily dispersible.
Strong Thickening Ability
HEC is an ideal thickener for coatings and cosmetics. Its thickening performance, combined with excellent suspension, dispersibility, safety, and water retention, ensures superior results in practical applications.
Salt Tolerance
HEC is highly stable in high-concentration salt solutions and does not decompose into ions. In electroplating, it contributes to more uniform, brighter plated surfaces. Notably, HEC maintains good viscosity in latex paints containing borates, silicates, and carbonates.

HEC’s film-forming capability is widely utilized across industries. In papermaking, it prevents grease penetration and supports glazing formulations. In textiles, it enhances fiber elasticity, reduces mechanical damage, and provides a temporary protective film during sizing and dyeing, which can be easily removed with water when needed.
