Four Major Reasons Affecting the Water Retention of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose
The water retention of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) products can be affected by the following four factors, detailed below for reference only:
1. Viscosity Affects the Water Retention of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose
When the viscosity of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose increases, its water retention rate also increases. However, once the viscosity reaches a certain level, the rate of increase in water retention rate tends to plateau.
2. Amount of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Affects the Water Retention of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose
Generally, the higher the amount added, the higher the water retention rate and the better the water retention effect. Within the range of 0.25-0.6%, the water retention rate increases more rapidly with increasing addition. As the amount added further increases, the rate of increase in water retention rate slows down.
3. The Thermogelation Temperature Affects the Water Retention of Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose
Generally, the higher the thermogelation temperature, the higher the water retention rate. Conversely, a lower thermogelation temperature results in a lower water retention rate.
4. The water retention of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is affected by uniformity.
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose that has undergone a uniform reaction has a high water retention rate due to the even distribution of methoxy and hydroxypropoxy groups.
